It’s never too soon to think about setting yourself goals and January is the best time to do it. There’s something about a new year that makes you want to make changes, start new things or try something different. Harness that energy and motivation and turn them into goals for the year – the challenge then is to keep on track.
Goal Setting with Gary Neville
Watch UA92 Co-founder Gary Neville talk about the importance of setting goals and how he makes it part of his daily routine.
Long term vs short-term
When goal setting, it’s good to think long-term and short-term. Don’t forget that goals are supposed to challenge you, stretch you and give you something to aim for – so don’t get too worried if your long-term goals seem ambitious. It’s good to dream big! Try and make your short-term goals achievable and measurable. That way you can reflect on how far you’ve come and the small wins will keep you motivated.
A healthy balance
Why limit goal setting to your career aspirations? You can apply goals to other aspects of your life such as your health, sports, hobbies, personal relationship, finances etc. Make sure you have a variety of goals for a healthy balance.
Getting Started
If you are sat staring at a blank piece of paper and not sure where to start, try asking yourself the following questions.
- Where do I want to be in 5/10 years
- What have I wanted to do but was too afraid to try
- What do I want to accomplish this year
- What do I most enjoy doing
- What are my values and priorities
- Where am I now and what is my reality
This should give you a good starting point and some thoughts to work with.
Break it down
Take one of your ‘bigger picture’ goals and break it down into achievable steps. The first step should be something you can work towards now. It’s really important to record your goals in some way. Consider adding them to your phone, so you always have them to hand and you can easily edit them if you need to.
Stay on track
Review your goals – keep reminding yourself about your goals and adjust them if things have changed. It’s important to revisit them regularly to make sure you’re on track to achieve what you set out to achieve. Set aside some time periodically to re-evaluate your ‘bigger picture’.
