Lucy graduated with a degree in Sports Management in 2024 and is currently working as an events intern at UA92. Find out why she values the skills she learnt through the 92 Programme and her plans for her future career.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I was part of UA92’s Class of 2024, graduating with a degree in Sports Management. As someone who didn’t want to go to university, UA92 appealed to me as it takes a different approach to learning. I was particularly drawn to the fact that a key focus was character and personal development, taught through our 92 Programme. I knew that there were further opportunities like work experience, regular guest lectures and mentoring alongside my academic studies.
I chose Sports Management because I’ve always had a passion for sport but wasn’t sure what I specifically wanted to do. I was already doing a Personal Training qualification, so I felt a sports business course would benefit me more. It was during the Events Management module I discovered my passion for events.
What made you choose an internship?
I chose an internship before going into a graduate role in order to gain more specific industry insight and experience. I wanted to work at UA92 specifically as I was keen to learn from a growing organisation that I knew hosted amazing events.
On an average day, what kinds of things are you working on in your internship?
I have a broad range of responsibilities including market research, setting up events, shadowing the Events Team, resourcing catering options based on a budget, pitching ideas, and running engagement sessions to senior members of staff.
What skills and experiences did you gain during your studies that you have applied to your internship?
From my Sports Management course I have developed many skills. I had to be organised and manage my time well, completing my assignments alongside my extra circular activities. I improved my communication and networking skills. When professionals from industry came into classes to deliver guest lectures, I learnt how to communicate with them professionally and build connections.
Within my degree, the 92 Programme was a key element which taught me many different skills and tips, preparing me for the working world. As part of the 92 Programme, I was taught to recognise my strengths and weaknesses, which has been a valuable skill to have, helping me to identify the areas I need to improve upon before going into graduate employment. UA92’s relationship with their partners gave me opportunities to work with industry experts and pitch ideas to them. We also got to gain valuable work experience at Altrincham FC, working across the events and hospitality teams.
What are your future career goals?
My future career goals are to work in the events industry and work my way up to coordinating and supporting on major events.
