Belgium out of the World Cup

Belgium vs Croatia Match Report by Charlie Semple

Belgium are out of the World Cup after failing to get out of the group stage following a 0-0 draw with Croatia earlier on today.

This is only the second time since 1998 that the Red Devils have failed to escape from the group stage of the tournament.

VAR was at the centre of attention in the first half as Croatia were denied a penalty after a delayed check for offside and second half substitute Romelu Lukaku failed to put away multiple big chances, leaving the game at 0-0.

Belgium had only scored one goal from 34 shots the whole tournament as they finished third in their group, with their only win coming against bottom of the group Canada.

Luka Modric proved that age is just a number as the 37-year-old “controlled the game” according to Micah Richards and he picked up the Man of the Match award after the full-time whistle.

Belgium’s ‘golden generation’ have lost their sparkle and key man Kevin De Bruyne has said: “No chance, we’re too old. We have a good squad, but it is ageing.”

This is potentially the last time we will see these key players for Belgium in a major tournament. “Not good enough” said manager Roberto Martinez after the game and he too may leave the side.
