Did you hear the announcement that tuition fees and maintenance loans are set to rise in 2025? Are you wondering whether this will mean you can’t afford to go to uni next year?
We know students are already feeling the pinch, so we want to reassure you that the upcoming changes should NOT have any impact on whether you can afford to go to uni or not. If anything, you will have more money to support you with living costs during your studies.
Here is a summary of the changes and what we know so far:
Tuition fees to increase by 3.1% to £9,535* per year, to ensure financial stability of universities
Tuition fees have not been increased since 2017, They have not increased in line with the rising costs that universities face. The government have approved a rise to the maximum tuition fee limits for standard full-time courses by 3.1% to £9,535.
Your monthly student loan repayments will NOT increase because of these changes
As a student using a tuition fee loan to pay your fees, it’s unlikely you’ll notice the tuition fee increase. Your student loan will still cover the full amount of your tuition fee and you will only start to repay this once you are earning over the threshold (currently £25,000 per year). Once you are earning above the threshold you’ll still pay only 9% of what you earn per year, regardless of what you have borrowed.
Students from the lowest income families will get as much as £414 extra per year in maintenance loan payments
Maintenance loans are designed to support students with living costs such as food, accommodation and travel. Similarly to tuition fees, maintenance loan payments have not increased in line with inflation meaning loans don’t stretch as far as they once did. This is set to change next year, with an extra £317 a year for students living away from home and studying outside London, making the maintenance loan £10,544 yearly.
Universities have been asked to consider making operational changes going forward
As a result of the changes, universities have been asked to do more to help disadvantaged students reach university, offer more flexible study options and deliver best value for students. These are all the principles that influenced the UA92 philosophy and are a core part of our delivery model. Find out more about the UA92 philosophy and how you study.
