How to fund an apprenticeship?

Understanding how to access apprenticeship funding will empower you to develop a highly skilled workforce, bridge skills gaps, and boost productivity. Discover how apprenticeships can become a powerful tool for your business’s growth and success.

What is the Apprenticeship Levy?

The apprenticeship levy is a form of tax designed to help companies offer more training opportunities and fill skills gaps with apprenticeships.

Who pays the Apprenticeship Levy?

Organisations with a payroll of more than £3 million pay 0.5% tax in their monthly payroll. This is automatically paid into the Apprenticeship Levy and stored in a fund which can be used to pay for apprenticeships.

How do I access my Levy fund?

Levy funds are accessed through the government’s Digital Apprenticeship Service (DAS) account. Employers must register for this account to manage their funds.

What can the Apprenticeship levy fund be used for?

Levy funds can only be used for apprenticeship training and end-point assessments with approved training providers. They cannot be used for apprentice wages, travel costs, or other related expenses.

What if my organisation doesn't pay the levy?

If your organisation doesn’t qualify as a levy-paying employer, you only need to contribute 5% of the apprenticeship course fees. The government covers the remaining 95%.

How do apprenticeships work?

Want to understand more about how apprenticeships work? If you are considering introducing apprenticeships into your business, you’ll want to understand what this will mean for you and your apprentice.

What is "off-the-job" training?

“Off-the-job” training is the learning that takes place outside of an apprentice’s day-to-day work duties.

It helps apprentices gain the broader knowledge, skills, and behaviours required for their subject area.

This can include classroom-based learning, workshops and seminars, online learning and webinars, mentoring sessions, self-study and research or completing assignments and projects.

How much "off-the-job" training is an apprentice required to do?

20% – which is calculated based on the apprentice’s contracted working hours over the duration of their apprenticeship. This includes paid holidays and other forms of paid leave, but excludes overtime.

Does off-the-job training happen during normal working hours?

Yes, off-the-job training must be carried out within an apprentice’s normal working hours. It is not intended to be done in the apprentice’s own time.

What is expected of an employer of an apprentice?

Apprentice employers must allow apprentices to dedicate at least 20% of their working time to off-the-job training. This involves facilitating their attendance at training sessions, allowing time for self-study, and supporting their learning.

How else are employers expected to support an apprentice?

Employers need to collaborate with the training provider to ensure the apprenticeship program is delivered effectively. This includes participating in progress reviews and providing feedback on the apprentice’s performance.
