Lydia Collier, Student Recruitment Manager at UA92, debunks five common myths about Clearing.
“Every year I talk to hundreds of students, parents and teachers in the run up to A-level results day and it still surprises me how many misconceptions and false narratives there are about what Clearing is and who it is for. Here are some of the most common mistakes people make about university Clearing.”
Myth 1: Clearing is only for people who fail their exams
“Clearing has a bad rep for being the ‘last resort’ but if you are smart you can use Clearing to your advantage. Clearing is for anyone who doesn’t hold an offer from a university – which can be down to many reasons, including:
- You’ve changed your mind about their original choices
- You’re late applying to uni
- You’ve decided to switch courses or universities
- You’ve exceeded their predicted grades and want to “trade up”
Remember, Clearing offers a flexible route for many different situations, not a sign of failure.”
Myth 2: Clearing opens on A-level results day
“There’s a misconception that Clearing is only available on A-level results day. Clearing is actually a 3-month window which opens in early July and closes in October. Yes, it becomes more active on A-level results day in August, but you can apply through Clearing before then — especially if you already have your results.
So don’t wait around, if you have your results you can apply today!”
Myth 3: You can’t use Clearing if you get accepted at your firm or insurance choice
“Just because you’ve been accepted at your firm or insurance choice doesn’t mean you’re locked in. You’re allowed to change your mind and it’s much easier to do than you probably think. If you’re absolutely sure you don’t want your confirmed place, you can release yourself from your current offer on UCAS Hub, simply with the click of a button. This will then allow you to add a clearing choice.
So, even if you have a last-minute change of heart, you have the freedom to explore other options!”
Myth 4: Only lower quality courses are available in Clearing
“There’s a stigma that courses in clearing are bottom of the barrel but in fact over 130 universities offered places in clearing in 2024, including many high-ranking universities. If you are savvy you can bag yourself a degree from a high-ranking university in Clearing, you just have to keep your options open and do your research. But remember, ratings are not the bee all and end all, it’s about getting the right fit for you.”
Myth 5: You must take the first offer you get
“You might feel under pressure to get yourself a clearing place secured but it’s always a good idea to shop around. You’re allowed to speak to as many universities as you want before making a final decision. Take time to compare your options and talk it through with your family or friends. It’s a big decision – you’re choosing where to spend the next few years of your life. Once you’re 100% sure, you can add it as your clearing choice on UCAS Hub.”
“Hopefully that dispels a lot of the myths that surround university clearing! If you have any questions about applying through Clearing get in touch with our Clearing advisors on 0300 124 9292.”
