A mature student is classed as anyone starting an undergraduate degree age 21 or older. We believe it’s never too late to unlock your greatness, and our community reflects that, with students aged from 18 to 70.
There are many reasons why someone might choose to return to education. You may be looking to change careers or finally pursue a subject you’ve always been passionate about. Maybe other responsibilities, such as raising children, took priority, or you followed a different path first, like going straight into employment or completing an apprenticeship.
If you’re considering university as a mature student, it’s completely normal to have questions. In this blog, we’ll be answering some of the most common ones – from applying and funding your studies, to fitting in and juggling uni life alongside everything else.
How do I apply for uni as a mature student?
Applying to university as a mature student might sound daunting, especially if it’s been a while since you were last in education. UCAS, personal statements and deadlines can feel confusing when you don’t have a school or college guiding you through the process.
The good news is that it’s just as easy to apply as a mature student.
Most undergraduate applications are made through UCAS, regardless of age. You’ll need to:
- Choose your course(s)
- Write a personal statement
- Provide details of qualifications or relevant experience
- Provide references
Can I apply directly to the university?
Alternatively, if you already have all your qualifications, you can apply directly to UA92 by emailing admissions@ua92.ac.uk. You’ll have to complete an application form and send over copies of any qualifications, so make sure you’ve got these handy!
As a mature student, your life experience, work history and motivation can be just as valuable as traditional qualifications. Universities like UA92 take a holistic approach to applications and understand that everyone’s journey may look different. If you don’t have traditional qualifications, it’s worth giving the admissions team a call to discuss if you would still be eligible under our contextual admissions policy.
What if I don’t have the grades?
If you don’t have traditional qualifications, that doesn’t mean university isn’t an option.
UA92 offers a Fast Forward programme, designed to help students without standard entry requirements prepare for degree-level study. It’s a one-week course, focusing on building academic skills, confidence and subject knowledge, and giving you a clear progression route onto your chosen course.
Life experience, professional background and motivation all matter and UA92 recognises that potential isn’t defined by exam results alone.
What do I put in my personal statement?
If you’ve never written a personal statement, don’t worry. The personal statement is now split into three questions to help guide you.
These are:
- Why you want to study the course
- How your previous qualification or experience helped you prepare for this course
- Skills you’ve gained through work, volunteering or life experience
UA92’s admissions team is on hand throughout the process to offer advice and guidance, so you don’t have to figure it out alone.
What funding is available for mature students?
One of the biggest worries for any student is funding. You may be asking yourself, “Can I afford to go back to uni as a mature student?”
If you’re studying for your first undergraduate degree, you’re usually entitled to the same student finance as other students, regardless of age.
This typically includes:
- Tuition Fee Loan: covering the cost of your course, paid directly to the university
- Maintenance Loan: to help with living costs such as rent, food and travel (the amount of maintenance loan you receive depends on factors like household income and where you live)
As a student, you may also be eligible for additional financial support, including:
- Council tax exemption or discount (full-time students are usually exempt)
- Student discounts on travel, food and retail
- Additional support funds or bursaries offered by universities
If you have dependants, childcare responsibilities or caring duties, there may be extra financial support available through Student Finance England.
You can find full details and apply for funding via Student Finance England.
How can I prepare for uni as a mature student?
Returning to education can feel like a big adjustment, but there are plenty of ways to prepare and feel confident before you start.
Top tips:
- Brush up on key skills: Reading, writing and basic digital skills can make a big difference.
- Get organised early: Setting up a routine, calendar or study space can help you balance study with other commitments.
- Ask questions: No question is too small! Our Admissions and Student Recruitment teams are there to help.
Will I fit in?
It’s completely normal to worry about fitting in, especially if you’re returning to education later in life. In reality, mature students make up a significant portion of the student population across UK universities.
Diversity is part of what makes our community so strong. You’ll study alongside people from different ages, backgrounds and industries, and there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and build relationships outside of the classroom, from sports teams and societies to networking events and welcome week activities.
Do I have to wait until September to start?
Not at UA92, one of our biggest advantages is that unlike many traditional universities, UA92 offers five entry points throughout the year, September, November, January, February and April*, meaning you don’t have to put your plans on hold until September. You can start your degree when it suits you.
How can I juggle uni with my other commitments?
For many mature students, uni is just one part of life, and they need to consider things like work, childcare, and caring responsibilities.
That’s why UA92 is built with flexibility in mind. With a fixed morning or afternoon timetable, you’ll know exactly when you’re expected to be on campus each week. This makes it much easier to plan work shifts, arrange childcare, maintain a routine and balance your study with day-to-day life.
Hear directly from our students Rachael, Tony, Somerset and Matt, as they talk about their experiences of studying at UA92 as mature learners.
