As Welcome Week approaches, it’s time to start thinking about preparing to start university. It’s an exciting time, but can also get overwhelming, especially when it comes to packing for it! Whether you’re moving into student accommodation, commuting from home, or somewhere in between, having the right things can make all the difference.
At UA92, we’re all about helping you feel confident, organised, and ready to hit the ground running. So, here’s the ultimate packing list to make sure you’ve got everything you need before Welcome Week begins.
Must Haves
Let’s start with the essentials. These are the items you’ll need for registration and settling into student life:
- Passport or photo ID (and Visa requirements if needed)
- Proof of tuition fee payment or self-funding
- Student Finance documents
- University acceptance letter
- Bank card and student discount cards (make sure to open a student bank account!)
Your Space, Your Style
Whether you’re in halls or a private room, make it feel like home:
- A duvet, pillows and bedding (keep an eye out for student deals)
- A mattress protector
- Clothes hangers
- A washing basket
- A desk lamp and extension leads
- Personal touches like photos, fairy lights, posters etc (we recommend getting some Command Strips or Blu Tak so you can decorate your walls)
Kitchen Kit
You don’t need a full chef’s setup, but a few basics go a long way:
- Plates, bowls, mugs and glasses
- Cutlery and cooking utensils
- Saucepans, a frying pan and baking trays
- A chopping board and tea towels
- Food containers and a reusable water bottle
- Washing-up liquid and sponges
Bathroom Basics
Whether you’ve got an en-suite or shared facilities:
- Towels (bring a few!)
- Toiletries (e.g. shampoo and conditioner, shower gel, etc)
- Flip-flops for shared bathrooms
- Toilet roll (trust us, bring some for move-in day)
Study & Tech
Get set for lectures, assignments, and everything in between:
- A laptop andcharger (if you have one – you can also borrow one on campus)
- Headphones
- Notebooks, pens and highlighters
- A backpack or tote bag
Cleaning & Washing
Yes, you’ll need to clean sometimes (sorry!):
- Washing powder or pods
- A drying rack
- Cleaning wipes or spray and kitchen roll or cloths
- Bin bags
- A small vacuum or dustpan and brush
Clothing & Extras
Manchester weather can be unpredictable, so pack smart:
- Everyday clothes
- Warm coat and waterproof jacket
- Comfy shoes and gym wear
- Loungewear for naps and/or Netflix
- Smart outfit for presentations or events
- Fancy dress (you’ll thank yourself later!)
- An umbrella (it is Manchester after all)
Nice-to-Haves
These aren’t essential, but they’ll make your uni life even better:
- Photos of family and friends
- Playing cards or board games
- A first aid kit
- A bike and lock (if you’re cycling to campus)
Final Tip: Don’t Overpack
You don’t need to bring everything on day one. Start with the basics and add as you go. Manchester has plenty of shops nearby, and you’ll figure out what works best for you once you settle in. If you’re worried about costs, keep an eye on deals and discounts around – many shops offer student deals in August and September.
