It’s been a long year, but the festive season is finally here! For students, the holiday cheer might be paired with some worries about the costs involved, and the growing To Do list you need to check twice. But a memorable time doesn’t need to be expensive, and planning ahead could save you a lot of stress over your time off. We’ve compiled the ultimate guide to keep your Winter Break stress-free and wallet friendly.
Gifts on a Budget
Secret Santa is your best friend. Homemade gifts, charity shop finds, or even a ‘skills swap’ (cook a meal, design a playlist) can make presents personal without breaking the bank. Use Unidays or Student Beans to find student discounts online or in shops across Manchester, very helpful when hunting down the perfect gift in The Trafford Centre or the Arndale Centre.
Food & Drink
Festive feasts don’t have to cost a fortune. Batch-cook with housemates, hunt for supermarket deals, or try apps like ‘Too Good To Go’ for bargain treats. Check out student-friendly deals at local cafés and restaurants. It’s a great way to soak up the seasonal atmosphere without overspending. If you want to make a day of it, explore Manchester’s Christmas Markets and treat yourself to a Yorkshire pudding wrap.
Christmas dinner doesn’t have to cost a fortune! Swap the traditional turkey for chicken or a veggie roast and buy seasonal veg from local markets for extra savings. Share the cost with housemates, everyone brings a dish or ingredient and turn it into a festive cooking night!
Travel Savings
Heading home? Book early to get a cheaper rate. We always recommend getting a 16-25 Railcard to save a third off the price of your ticket. If you’re staying in Manchester, plan local adventures instead, like Christmas markets in the city-centre and light trails at Media City are just a tram ride away
Living Costs
Are your heating bills rising? Layer up before reaching for the thermostat, or try turning it to 18-20°C – this is often warm enough. Turn off the heating when out or away and avoid portable heaters, as these can be expensive to run. Every little help when January looms!
Plan for January
Avoid the post-Christmas panic. Note your first teaching week (week commencing 12th January), set small goals, and block out study time now. UA92’s six-week structure means you’ll know exactly what’s coming so use that to your advantage!
Mental Health & Wellbeing
The holidays aren’t easy for everyone. If you’re feeling stressed or lonely over the winter break, reach out to friends and family if you’re able to, or UA92’s Wellbeing Team. Many services and helplines operate 24/7 and throughout Christmas, find out more on our Student Support page.
