Our Wellbeing Journeys: How UA92 helped us overcome our challenges

BACK

Jack, an Accounting and Business Management student, and Sabeena, a Business Management student, share the transformative journeys they have experienced at UA92. Starting a degree can be a daunting experience for anyone, and even more so for students with a disability or neurodiversity. But with UA92’s inclusive support, both Jack and Sabeena are thriving.

Finding our feet

Sabeena: Before joining UA92, I struggled with academic anxiety and really lacked confidence, especially around exams. Reaching out to the Wellbeing Service felt scary at first, but working with the student wellbeing team changed everything. We explored how my past experiences shaped my current worries, practised reframing negative thoughts and even used gratitude lists to help boost my mood and self-belief.

Jack: I found out I had autism in primary school, so I’ve always been aware of how new environments can trigger my social anxiety. When I came to an Open Day, it just felt different, in a good way. Early on, I was introduced to the Wellbeing Team, who became a consistent support Having people around you who truly understood you makes all the difference.

Building a routine

Jack: The AM/PM timetable works brilliantly for me. It gives me structure, helps me stay calm and gives me time for fresh air, food breaks and even gym sessions, which Sabeena and I recently started doing together.

Sabeena: As I’m a morning student, studying from 9am-1pm, I can do my dance class every Monday evening. The routine helps keep me balanced, and studying one module at a time means I can fully focus without feeling overwhelmed.

Wellbeing tools

Sabeena: The wellness themed focus days through the 92 Programme have given me so many practical tools on everything from sleep and nutrition to managing mental wellbeing.

Jack: It helped me figure out what I personally needed to work on. Now I use grounding techniques, breathing exercises and healthier daily habits to stay on top of things.

Careers and skills support

Jack: With the confidence strategies I gained through the Wellbeing Service, I actually ended up securing a dream internship at Barclays.

Sabeena: I’ve been working on my public speaking and presentations skills, an area I’ve really struggled with in the past. Using VR interview simulations through Student Support has helped me feel calmer and more prepared than ever.

Reflecting on how far we’ve come

Jack: I feel like I’ve been on such a journey of personal growth. I’ve achieved things that I am extremely proud of including getting a parttime job in Manchester, landed an internship at Barclays as an Operations Analyst and even moving into my own flat.

Sabeena: I’ve developed so much, from communication to time management. Being part of the BUCS Emerging Leaders programme and working as a Fan Engagement Officer at Cheadle Town has been a real highlight. Now I’m working on building my personal brand and planning to run for Business Student Rep.
