Livin’ the Manchester Life: Saffron’s Top Spots in the city

BACK

Meet Saffron, a second-year Digital Marketing student at UA92. Born and raised in Manchester, she thought she knew the city inside out, but studying at UA92 means she’s found a whole new side.

From hidden study spots and weekend adventures to restaurants and art exhibitions, here are her go-to places, recommendations and student friendly tips for living the Manchester life.

Finding new faves

Being an afternoon student at the Business School meant I was right in the middle of the city, so obviously I had to hunt down the best pre-class study spots. My all-time favourites quickly became Ezra & Gil, Caravan and Grind. All of them are perfect spots to grab a coffee and some brunch whilst studying.

I’m obsessed with keeping up with new openings and food deals. I get the best updates from @mcr.eats, @mcrfinest and @girlsonthegomcr, and I love watching honest reviews from @justjessdaily on TikTok. Recently, I’ve even started doing food reviews myself with friends!

My night out musts

If I’m in the mood for music or a slightly fancier vibe, I love either 186 or Louis. If I want something more laid-back, then you can’t beat Albert’s Schloss or The Oast House. For when the sun is shining. Manchester completely transforms in the summer months. I like to head out of the city-centre to Altrincham Square, especially The Con Club, is great for a relaxed drink. New Islington Marina is my top spot for warm evenings – you’ve got great views of the canal, and you can even grab a Rudy’s pizza and sit on the grass. It’s the full summer experience.

For a shopping day

If I’m in the mood for a proper mooch around the shops, I head to Stockport. It has the same quirky, creative vibe as Ancoats, with loads of vintage shops and independent markets – I always end up finding something great!

Culture and something different

I love going to exhibitions at MediaCity. I’ve seen Van Gogh Live, the Vogue exhibition and a few other pop-ups – there’s always something new to see. I’m also obsessed with Everyman Cinema. You can order food straight to your seat, which makes for a perfect girls’ night or date.

My favourite days out

Altrincham is so easy to get to by tram from the Main Campus, and I’ve discovered new lunch and dinner spots like Toast and Damo, plus beautiful running and walking routes around Dunham Massey.

Didsbury is another favourite area of mine and I love walking around Fletcher Moss and grabbing a coffee and cake. If you’re willing to travel a bit further, Formby Beach is a short train ride away and it’s perfect for a sunny picnic day!
