Hi, I’m Katie and I’m a Technology Consulting Graduate at KPMG working within the Data & AI team. I work with clients and my team to upgrade and improve current systems using a variety of different tools and programming languages. I studied Computer Science at UA92 and graduated in 2026.
What led you to pursue a career in tech?
I always enjoyed problem solving and maths at school, but I remember creating websites and scratch games in Key Stage 3 at 12/13 and thinking it was something I really enjoyed, this carried on into Sixth Form where I got to make a Rubik’s Simulator as my project. I realised that technology and computer science allowed me to still be creative whilst using that logic, which was perfect for me!
How did studying Computer Science at UA92 prepare you for your role?
Studying at UA92 gave me real hands-on experience with languages and tools such as Power Automate, Python and SQL, which I now use for my current role. Also having lots of guest lecturers from organisations like KMPG, Slalom, Microsoft and Pelly made me realise the link between my studies and the workplace. Opportunities like having a mentor and attending insight days really helped me gain insight into what it is like to be in the workplace. It also gave me the knowledge about the role I’m in now and made me want to apply!
What does your day to day look like?
I’m currently working within the public sector, which means my work is actually making a real difference!
What technologies, tools, or skills do you use in your job?
I heavily use Microsoft services in my role: Azure DevOps, Synapse, Fabric, Power BI as well as languages such as MySQL, YAML and Python. I also have to use a lot of the skills I gained from the 92 Programme such as professionalism and reflection in my day to day to get the most out of any teamwork and projects I work on.
Have you contributed to any initiatives such as mentoring, outreach, or women-in-tech groups?
Since leaving UA92, I have attended STEM Women careers fairs and have also done a lot of work with UA92, assisting on the Industry Insight Day and delivering a guest lecture as part of this year’s TechFest preparations, which felt surreal after experiencing both of these from the other side only a couple of months ago. I knew I wanted to get involved in this after enjoying my roles as student ambassador and GetUActive Coordinator during my time at UA92.
What advice would you give to prospective students or women entering tech?
My advice to students or women wanting to go into tech is to explore and try everything, challenge yourselves and don’t be afraid of making mistakes as they’ll always give you experience. Tech is a place for everyone and anyone and most importantly you can add so much to wherever you go simply by being uniquely yourself.
My parents and grandparents hadn’t come from a corporate or office background – in fact I came from a farming background originally! Me and my sister were the first generation of our family to go to university. I also did an accelerated degree which meant that I was only 20 when I graduated!
