With A-Level Results Day fast approaching, it’s time to get prepared. Whether you’re planning to call a Clearing helpline to apply to your perfect course, or find that your results didn’t go as planned, it’s always a good idea to have what you need with you before you pick up the phone, so you can focus on your options.
To help you, we’ve put together a checklist of everything you should have with you to make your call easier.
1. Your Results
This might seem obvious, but make sure you have all your results easily accessible. This includes:
• A-Level or Level 3 BTEC results: The grades you’ve just received are the most crucial part of the conversation.
• GCSE results: Universities will also need to know your grades for these, especially for core subjects like English and Maths.
• Any other qualifications: Don’t forget to mention anything else that might strengthen your application, such as an EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) or any other Level 3 qualifications that might carry UCAS points.
2. Your UCAS Number
You’ll need your UCAS Personal ID to hand. This is a 10-digit number that allows universities to access your application details quickly and easily. Having it ready saves time and makes the process much smoother
3. A List of Universities and Courses of Interest
Before you start calling, research which universities and courses you’re interested in, and have a list prepared beforehand.
• A list of universities: Write down a few universities you’d be happy to attend.
• Course names: Be specific about the courses you’re interested in at each university.
• Clearing hotline numbers: Find and save the direct clearing hotline numbers for each university on your list. This will save you from scrambling to find them in the heat of the moment.
4. Your Non-Negotiables
What are the absolute must-haves for you? It’s easy to feel pressured to accept any offer, so it’s important to know what you won’t compromise on. This could be:
• Subject area: “I have to do a media course.”
• Location: “I need to be study in Manchester.”
• Specific requirements: “I need to be on a course with placement opportunities.”
Having these non-negotiables clear in your mind will help you make the best decision for you.
5. Emotional Support
Clearing can be an intense and emotional experience. Make sure you have someone with you for support, whether that’s a parent, a friend, or a teacher. They can help you stay calm, think logically, and celebrate with you when you get that offer!
6. Your Questions
Prepare a list of questions you want to ask. This could be anything you need to gather the information you need to make the right decision. Think about things like:
• Upcoming Open Days or available campus tours
• Course structure and modules
• Accommodation options
• Student support services
• Student life and societies
