Top 10 Tips for a Calm Results Day

BACK

A-level results day can be an emotional time. You may feel nervous, excited or unsure about your future. To help you navigate the day confidently, our Student Wellbeing Advisor, Sarah, has put together some top tips and advice to help make the day as stress-free as possible.

1. Set realistic expectations

Having realistic expectations can help you to manage your emotions. Try and keep a sense of perspective – whilst your results are important, they’re not the whole picture and they don’t define you or your abilities. What happens on the day is only one part of your journey.

2. Keep yourself busy in the lead up

The days before results can feel endless, so focus on activities that keep your mind active and your mood lifted. Spend some quality time with your friends and family, pick up a new hobby, exercise to get those feel-good endorphins flowing, start a new book or explore a new place.

3. Prioritise rest

Tiredness will only worsen feelings of stress and anxiety. Aim for a good night’s sleep the night before results day, even if your mind is racing. Try a mindfulness or sleep podcast, calming music, or keep a notebook by your bedside to write down anything on your mind. A well-rested brain is better equipped to handle whatever the day brings.

4. Stay hydrated and eat well

Nerves can make it hard to eat, however your brain and body need fuel to function at their best. Start the day with a balanced meal and drink plenty of water to keep your energy up. Avoid caffeine – too much can make you feel even more anxious!

5. Take a digital detox

Social media on results day can turn into a comparison trap. It’s important to remember that everyone’s journey is different. Limit your time online, or take the day off entirely, focusing instead on connecting with people who uplift and support you.

6. Have a plan for every outcome

Preparation is key. Think about the different possibilities – you might exceed expectations, meet your offers exactly, or miss them. For each scenario, know your next step. It could be confirming your place, contacting universities, exploring Clearing options, considering apprenticeships, or even taking a gap year to regroup and refocus.

7. Use grounding techniques

If you feel overwhelmed, grounding techniques can help you stay present. Try the “5-4-3-2-1” method, Name five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste. Breathing exercises, like inhaling for four counts and exhaling for six, can also calm your nervous system.

8. Reach out for support

If you’re feeling anxious, sad, or unsure, don’t bottle it up. Talk to a trusted friend, family member, teacher, or a helpline. You don’t have to process the day alone, sharing how you feel can help lighten the load.

9. Celebrate your efforts, no matter the result

Results day is about more than just grades. Recognise the hard work, resilience, and personal growth you’ve shown throughout your studies. Acknowledge your achievements and how far you’ve come. If you’re looking for ways to celebrate in Manchester, check out our blog.

10. End the day on a positive

Plan something enjoyable for the evening. It could be a meal with family, a movie night with friends, a walk in your favourite park or anything that brings you joy. It gives you something to look forward to during the day and lets you finish the day feeling valued and supported.

Whatever your results, your future is full of possibilities. If you’re looking for your next step, UA92’s Clearing team is ready to help you find the course that’s right for you and start your journey with confidence. Call UA92’s Clearing Helpline on 0300 124 9292 to speak to a Clearing Advisor.
