Kickstart your career in the exciting world of football media production with the BA (Hons) Football Broadcast and Journalism degree course.

Explore all aspects of football journalism and media production, and gain in-depth knowledge of men’s and women’s football, alongside other underrepresented groups within the sport.

Develop your skills in football research, idea development, interviewing, football writing and audio/video editing, as well as building confidence using professional standard production equipment.

Build a firm understanding of media laws and ethics, as well as industry regulations and codes of practice. Learn how to harness football analytical data to report on matches and player performances, as well as gaining knowledge of marketing and branding within the industry.

Our teaching team has experience working for renowned broadcasters, which, alongside the input of sporting and media industry partners, will provide learners with the perfect platform to launch their media career covering the ‘world’s game’.

Module 1 - Introduction to Sports Journalism

Dive into the dynamic world of sports journalism. This module introduces the fundamental principles of journalism. You’ll explore how to craft compelling narratives across platforms and gain a foundational understanding of a journalist’s multifaceted role. You will examine the ethical principles and professional codes that underpin responsible journalism. Furthermore, you will be introduced to the study and practice of sports journalism within today’s globalised media landscape and digital age, engaging with current debates and understanding historical and professional contexts.

Module 2 - Introduction to Football Reporting

This module will introduce you to the reporting of football. You’ll learn to craft engaging content for the sport, immersing yourself in industry-based reporting scenarios to gain an understanding of broadcast journalism. Learn how to report on football performance analytics, as well as writing for broadcast.

Module 3 - Introduction to Football Broadcast

Explore the world behind the cameras and microphones of live football. This module will introduce you to the principles of producing engaging content for football broadcasting, as well as the technical skills that you’ll need across platforms. You will also gain practical insights into the variety of production roles and expertise within the industry.

Module 4 - Media, Technology and Culture

You’ll reflect on your own everyday media usage, explore how rapid changes in information and communication technologies shape social, economic and cultural transformations within societies and consider issues of media production, dissemination and reception.

Module 1 - News Journalism

You’ll explore how ‘news’ is identified, gathered, researched, authenticated, recorded, and presented. You’ll produce engaging news, reporting on a variety of topics and develop your journalism skills and understanding of a ‘newsroom’ environment.

Module 2 - Football Reporting and Studio Presenting

Get ready for game day! Build your skills in front of the camera and engage the sports community, from football reporting to player performance analysis. Develop your interviewing and presenting skills and learn how to bring exciting football content to digital platforms.

Module 3 - Football Broadcast

This hands-on module will challenge you to create your own football content in a multi-media, contemporary broadcast environment. Develop your practical broadcasting and reporting skills and use your creativity to craft compelling football content.

Module 4 - Sports Journalism and Broadcasting

What kind of journalist do you want to be? This module will explore the role of the journalist in today’s society, with a specific focus on your own future employability within the sports media landscape. Analyse a variety of journalistic roles and their perception in wider society. Building on these insights, you will develop a personalised career plan and apply your knowledge through practical sports journalism, developing a piece of work that directly showcases your skills and demonstrating how it complements your chosen career trajectory.

Module 1 - Football Communications and Branding

Explore the marketing, communications, and PR roles within the football industry, and discover how ‘the world’s game’ can impact popular culture through campaigns and innovative techniques. You will analyse the pivotal roles and relevance of effective communications, PR, and social media when cultivating a football team’s following, both nationally and internationally.

Module 2 - Football Punditry and Presenting

This module is designed to build your presenting and punditry skills by studying a combination of practical techniques, theories and key production competencies. You will explore reporting, football performance analysis, presenting and punditry, alongside the history and relevance of pundits and presenters within the industry. With an opportunity to create your own content, you’ll be learning practical production techniques, while examining emerging issues within football.

Module 3 - Live Football Broadcasting

This is your chance to challenge yourself through your chosen specialism within football broadcast and journalism. Whether it’s in front of the camera, or a behind the scenes production role, you will produce content in a live or ‘as-live’ setting. Test your practical skills and creativity as you build your broadcasting experience and get a taste of working in the industry.

Module 4 - Final Project

You’ll complete a project, on a relevant subject area that demonstrates your individual research, problem-solving, and practical production skills.

Assessment takes the form of a Professional Diary, which is a log capturing evidence of your learning, activities and reflections. This can be videos, photos or even audio.

This is supplemented with a reflective account, which links your experiences to your personal growth.

Meet the Media Team

Azra Haracic

Lecturer in Media

I’m a Bosnian born visual artist, photographer, and researcher whose work bridges art, documentary photography, and cultural and media studies. My interdisciplinary practice explores themes of identity, memory, trauma, and resilience, particularly in relation to post-conflict societies and diasporic experience.

I actively participate in academic conferences and cultural dialogues focused on peacebuilding, reconciliation, and memory work in post-war contexts. I’ve contributed to panels examining how artistic, media, and photographic practices can foster intercultural understanding, support community healing, and document human experiences of conflict and recovery.

I hold an MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography, where I developed a critical approach to narrative image-making and socio-political storytelling. My formal training in visual communication informs both my artistic practice and scholarly engagement with visual culture and material memory. With over a decade of teaching experience, I bring a wealth of knowledge and skills from the creative and media industries to my work.

Colin Stone

Lecturer in Media & Journalism

I have over 30 years’ experience working in television, and joined UA92 in 2024. I have directed programmes for major broadcasters, including sport, music and observational documentary.  I have produced investigative current affairs films for ITV1’s ‘Tonight’, Channel 4’s ‘Dispatches’ and BBC1’s ‘Panorama’.  As a Series Producer, I have worked on high-profile programmes, including 24hrs in A&E for Channel 4.  My passion for developing the future generation of content creators has led me to become a media industry mentor, as well as delivering training courses and documentary masterclasses.   As part of the Media Team, I am committed to sharing his extensive knowledge and experience with students at UA92.

Associate Dean (Sports, Media & External Engagement)

I hold teaching and applied practice qualifications, and I lead a team of ambitious, hard-working and knowledgeable staff members. 

I’m keen to ensure UA92 students are provided with a holistic array of supports and experiences which will serve them well now and in their future endeavours.

I bring my HE teaching, research and applied practice experiences to UA92 to; inform, guide and enhance an inclusive student experience.

Moreover, I’m keen to ensure the curriculum is informed and underpinned by contemporary research which is brought to life through suitable pedagogical practices.

Media Lecturer

My background is in international news and video journalism. Some important moments of coverage include the Russia-Ukraine war, the US and UK elections, and holding politicians to account across parliaments. As a presenter, I have interviewed talent on the pink carpet and hosted a tour of the Big Brother House, and as a writer, my stories have featured in many of the UK and US national publications. I enjoy exploring social issues and forms of power with UA92’s Media students.

Gareth Taylor

Media Lecturer

As a Media Lecturer at UA92, I bring nearly two decades of international expertise to the classroom with experience of covering major news stories and producing sports programs focusing on football, boxing, and motorsport. My work as a self-shooting director and producer has taken me around the globe, resulting in award-winning documentaries. I have also contributed to various projects including films, commercials, music videos, and documentaries. I’m passionate about amplifying the voices and experiences of underrepresented individuals, bringing their stories to light through compelling visual narratives. In my role as an educator, I am dedicated to nurturing technically proficient, journalistically confident, and independent students who possess curiosity and critical thinking skills. Outside of work, I maintain an adventurous spirit and enjoy participating in competitive 5-a-side football matches.

Michelle Gooden-Jones

Lecturer in Media and Journalism

I’m an experienced television news producer with a dynamic background at top news organisations like Sky News and Al Jazeera English, where I crafted compelling news reports, scripts, and visual segments. I’ve supported high-profile political media at the House of Commons with the Rt Hon Diane Abbott MP and fine-tuned her media monitoring expertise at the Cabinet Office. With additional production experience at the BBC, I bring a rich skill set in storytelling, guest booking, and strategic content, making me a versatile asset in journalism education.

Phil Jones - Media Academic

Phil Jones

Senior Lecturer

With more than 30 years’ experience in journalism and broadcasting, I joined UA92 in 2020. I presented a daily show for CNN out of Atlanta from 1994-2002 and was a presenter/reporter for BBC Sport for the next 15 years, covering such major events as the Olympics, World Cup, Commonwealth Games, Wimbledon, the Ryder Cup and the Augusta Masters. I’m a Salfordian born and bred, and I’m now able to share a wealth of knowledge with students across a variety of journalism and media and communications courses.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The standard entry requirements for the BA (Hons) Football Broadcast and Journalism course is 104 UCAS points.* However, each application is assessed on an individual basis, taking into consideration a wide range of factors. Depending on your personal circumstances, and in line with our  Contextual Admissions Policy, your application may still be considered on an individual basis. NON-TRADITONAL

Some qualifications do not carry UCAS Tariff points but may still be considered. We take into account a range of qualifications and work/life experience that can demonstrate your ability to succeed on the course. Each application is assessed on an individual basis, taking into consideration a wide range of factors.

INTERNATIONAL

International Baccalaureat 

Pass the IB Diploma with minimum 28 points overall, with 14 points from Higher Level Subjects.

English Language Requirements

In addition to meeting the academic criteria, if your first language isn’t English, you may be asked for a recognised English language qualification. This is especially important if you are not a national of a majority English speaking country or you haven’t completed a degree in English. If you are an international student, in order to obtain a student visa, you will be required to demonstrate that you have the correct level of English language competency to study in the UK.
